Advancing sustainability in contemporary product design through an exploration of indigenous Barbadian vernacular product design, practices, and the integration of recycled materials

Traditional Barbadian design culture originated from a unique merger of African and British influences during the island’s colonisation the 1640s. For the purpose of sugar cane cultivation, building, and manufacturing, British settlers imported African enslaved people, who brought with them their own unique cultural practices and values.

This PhD research will explore traditional Barbadian vernacular design and practices to inform sustainable practices in contemporary product design. By delving into the rich heritage, the history and cultural expressions of Barbados, this research aims to unearth unique design insights that can be integrated into contemporary sustainable product design, fostering a more harmonious relationship between people and the environment.
