Conservatoire research seminar: Music, People and Place

December 6, 2016 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Music, People and Place: Understanding Attitudes Towards Art and Education in Classical Music Audiences Today | Sarah Price (University of Sheffield and Trinity Laban Conservatoire)

Why do people attend classical music concerts? This question has puzzled academic and commercial researchers for many years. With classical music organisations across the country struggling to attract the next generation of audiences, understanding how attenders decide to go to a concert is of urgent concern.

In this paper, Sarah Price (AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award Student at the University of Sheffield and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) presents findings from her doctoral research with audiences at the CBSO. This study was concerned with how ideas of ‘light’ and ‘serious’ classical music influence concert attendance, and how arts organisations negotiate entertaining and educating their audiences.

This talk is part of the Conservatoire public research seminar series that take place in the New Lecture Theatre at the Conservatoire. All welcome!
