The aim of my research is to investigate music consumers’ everyday engagement with music streaming services, the algorithms these services use, and the potential effects this engagement may have towards consumers’ musical discovery and relationships with artists. It will seek to reverse the analytical focus on algorithms by exploring how the human user of algorithms is immersed in platform consumption, use and meaning-making, how the algorithm is itself mediated through everyday consumption, and linked into users’ other musical activities and preferences.
