A Practice-Led Research: Re-imagination of the Peranakan Objects

The Peranakan community is not an ethically-constructed, instead it is a cultural group that exist in many permutations and often share similar beliefs and values. Despite the good efforts to revive the interest of their material culture, a phenomenon central to the Peranakan identity, the community today have become estranged from their cultural objects. These objects which once held social and cultural significance may now be associated with today’s Peranakans in different ways. I propose to re-imagine the perceived values of these objects and what they can mean to the Peranakans today.
