My research aims to outline the cultural value of philosophical pessimism’s legacy as expanded upon primarily by contemporary horror manga and japanese literature. I will be reading works of manga as philosophical conversations on the state of contemporary art and cultural representation, I will also be comparing them with the state of western graphic novels and the literature that both consciously and unconsciously inspired said works. The research emphasis on literarture is indicative of how I will pursue the examination of the cultural landscape through its most polemic literary critics/ original authors and graphic artists depicting the zeitgeist around them.
