My research examines the process of writing music for large ensembles within self-organised, punk influenced communities, commonly known as “do-it-yourself scenes”. Through this documentation process, I will be addressing the sustainability of such projects involving a mass of people, how it can portray feelings of inclusivity and exclusivity as well as looking at how the community benefits from collaborating on pieces such as these. I use performers from rock, jazz and new music backgrounds and through writing, arranging and performing this music, explore how to best utilise this self-organised community.
