This research is a practice-based project in composition which will investigate reference in compositional contexts. The project is an exploration of the use of embedded references to personal interests and personal experiences in Nicholas’ compositional processes and my musical output.
In addition to the creation of a portfolio of new works, the research will rationalise parts of Nicholas’ practice which are currently instinctive so that other composers, artists, and performing practitioners can use similar processes and methods in their own work.
