Exploring Rhythmic Fluidity through Composition and Piano Performance

Music is a temporal art. On the one hand, time can be seen as an empty canvas onto which each and every musical event is painted. On the other hand, time can also be seen as a chunk of modelling clay that can be squeezed, stretched, or moulded by musical events.

This study seeks to combine composition and piano performance into a single process of exploration of the idea of rhythmic fluidity in music, by composing a portfolio of pieces that systematically deploy different combinations of fluidity and rigidity of rhythm, and performing a selection of pieces to demonstrate different approaches to rhythmic fluidity. Most importantly, the interaction between rhythmic fluidity in composition and that in performance would hopefully uncover some of the vast expressive potential of musical time and rhythm.
