My research explores the role of the shawl within Welsh national identity, its origins, perception and current status. It will examine all forms of shawl within the context of the Welsh national costume. It seeks to clearly establish when the shawl became considered a key piece in Welsh national costume, examining its historical developmental stages, with the aim of understanding the rationale involved in its adoption and continued use as an icon of Welsh national culture.
