This project investigates the artistic and cultural significance of the contemporary large jazz/improvising ensemble in the UK. The research explores the history of the UK scene, particularly with reference to a ‘golden age’ of British creative innovation in this field from 1960s-1990s and compares it to key European contexts. Later, I will establish a new UK-based professional ensemble to test the viability of key concepts and initial findings, and develop a plan for sustainability. The results will lead to a model of best practice for such ensembles and a greater understanding of their importance to contemporary music culture.
