My research focuses on the queering of player-character design in games, utilising the themes and systems of monstrosity.
I am investigating queer interventions into the complex entanglement of player and character, asking questions around what it might look like to build non-normative and inhuman experiences. Monsters have a number of qualities which are helpful in making these interventions in terms of threatening identity categories, as well as troubling the values of “good” design.
I am interested in game making that has a relationship with, but fundamentally differs from, the commercially driven tradition, instead centring intersubjectivity.
