Type Talks: Reading and Writing Text

January 16, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Type Talks | Trine Rask: Reading and Writing Text

When you read you recognise familiar shapes on a background. The pattern you decode consists of letters and depending on the frequency and sequence of letters (which language, which words) adjustment to the single element must be made to fit it in. The same happens in handwriting, but since the letters are made one by one, adjustment happens along the way, but still within a system that makes it possible to the reader to understand.

This talk focuses on my typefaces North, a book typeface optimized for the Scandinavian languages, Covergirl, Rum, Karen, a display type influenced by Karen Blixens handwriting and project Rask håndskrivning, a way to teach handwriting based on drawing, calligraphy and modular type design.

Trine Rask is specialised in type design work on corporate and retail typefaces, logotypes, restoration and other tasks related to letters and fonts. More recently Rask has focused on handwriting, reading writing and text. Rask has a master in type design from Type&Media in The Hague. In 2008, Rask released her first typeface North and have subsequently released several typefaces, the most recent Rum Family. In 2010 Rask received a Certificate of Excellence in Type design from Type Directors Club, New York. Since 2005 Rask has taught type design at the Danish School of Media including workshops in type design at ex. Danish Design School, Royal Academy of Architecture, Krabbesholm Højskole. In 2007 Rask published a practical learning book in Danish about the basic principles and the working process of type design.  2016 Rask received Diploma for excellent contribution to book craft in Denmark 2015 from Forening for Boghaandværk.
