Have you ever come across misleading images, videos, or posts during elections, either in your country or elsewhere? Maybe you or someone you know has unintentionally shared such misinformation. The real question is, “Why does this happen?” My research explores the political dynamics, media, and cultural forces fuelling electoral misinformation, focusing on elections from 2015 to 2023 in Nigeria. It examines how false narratives are created, shared, and consumed, and their impact on Nigeria’s electoral integrity. The study also investigates the media’s role in either amplifying or countering misinformation during elections in Nigeria.
