Critical Study of digital data and its contribution to young people's social and cultural inequalities

My research examines the contribution of  data-driven policymaking to the inequalities of young people.  They have been amongst the hardest hit by the ‘austerity’ measures taken by national and local government post-2008 and many feel that they may be neglected or misrepresented by policymakers. Collaborating with Beatfreeks Collective, a Birmingham-based youth engagement company, I am  exploring 1)  how  digital data collected, interpreted  and creatively communicated by young people might enable them to counter policymakers’ negative narratives of their lives and 2) how alternative forms of engagement using creative practices might contribute to redressing the power imbalance between them.
