Graphic DNA: Towards a Taxonomy of Environmental Lettering

This research proposes the Marshall Taxonomy of Environmental Lettering (MTEL) to implement a systematic approach to recording environmental lettering using Birmingham as a case study. The MTEL) can broaden understanding of lettering in the environment through a more subjective approach which enables an informed discussion based on the interpretation of research outcomes rather than simply aesthetics. This not only helps to advance studies of environmental lettering but, in turn, establishes a more flexible and robust approach to the subject. As well as building an extensive photographic archive recording the lettering landscape, I recently formed the Birmingham Sign Museum + Archive.
