Wellbeing and Access to Civic Green Space: Reclaiming the Public Infrastructure of the Post-industrial City

Building on MA research examining the interpretation of placemaking theory in contemporary policy, this research project discusses burying Birmingham’s inner ring road to access the potential benefits to all facets of wellbeing arising from the creation of civic green space. The arrival of a national infrastructure hub (HS2 Curzon Street) coupled with the local authority’s commitment to lowering emissions/investing in low carbon modes of transport put pressure on the existing footpath and cycleways. A review of international case studies will examine how successful implementation has been in improving quality of life and making space for nature in the city.
