HS2 Stations as a Catalyst to Improve Civic Life: Learning from Europe

Building on a master’s thesis examining the interpretation of placemaking theory in contemporary policy, this research examines if and how an increased quality of life has been achieved in Europe and what lessons can be learned for the UK. Its focus is on the quality and extent of the public realm and the ways in which this has impacted on civic life in and around the stations, including the contributions to the ambitions of the project, local economies, civic life, and identity.

The interfaces of drawing and textual relationships are central to the design research, which aims to reconceptualise station areas through strategic spatial mapping.
