Data analysis workshop on stance and stancetaking

March 6, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Professor Scott Kiesling (University of Pittsburgh) will be leading a workshop on data analysis, drawing on his research on stance.

Stance and stancetaking is a useful tool for all sorts of sociolinguistic analysis, but what is it and how do we find it? This workshop outlines a framework for analysis and then provides practical steps for performing such an analysis. This workshop is designed for PhD students and ECRs working with a variety of spoken and textual data. No prior knowledge of linguistics is required. There will also be time for workshopping your own data within the framework, so feel free to bring some.

About the speaker:

Scott Fabius Kiesling is a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh. Professor Kiesling received a PhD in linguistics in 1996 from Georgetown University, where he previously completed an M.S. in linguistics, and he has held previous academic positions at the University of Sydney and Ohio State University. He is the author of Language Variation and Change (Edinburgh University Press, 2011) and Language, Gender, and Sexuality: An Introduction (Routledge, 2019).
