The purpose of my research is to engage with how professional documentary photographers produce empathetic observations of social issues.
- What is empathy and its role for the photographer of social issues?
- What values and motivations are driving the engaged, social documentary photographer?
- How do these values and motivations get expressed through images?
- How do engaged photographers see and place their work as impactful contributions towards social change?
Through an in-depth exploration of these four questions I want to make a significant practical and theoretical contribution relevant to contemporary practitioners in the field, aiming to investigate intellectual and emotionally positive values and empathy as applied in photographic perception and practice.
