The teaching of singing in Further/Higher Education in the UK within Musical Theatre – Art or Science?

Over the last 20 years, the advancement of vocal research has dramatically affected the way in which singing pedagogy is taught in conservatoires, drama schools and university degree programmes across the UK within Musical Theatre. Have we lost the ability to provide an effective learning experience and allow students to embody the discipline as an art form or are we, as singing ‘specialists’, too concerned in using science to enable students to produce a ‘perfect’ sound?
