Fictional Reality: Chinese Contemporary Art and Urban Transformation

This research investigates the artistic responses to urbanization in Mainland China since the late 1990s by addressing the spectacle of Chinese contemporaneities. The fascinating urban terrains embody the achievement of modernization, nevertheless they conceal part of the challenges posed by an extreme urbanization. The fictionality of the outer reality activates in citizens and artists feelings of displacement, alienation, uncertainty and sense of loss. It is in the artistic responses that I want to read the multiple narratives and understandings that emerge from such porous and constantly shifting reality.
