How the Vibraphone Can Be a Mouth: Personal Sound on the Vibraphone in Jazz and Improvised Music Performance

Through a portfolio of recorded music and writings, I seek to find out the ways in which personal sound is constructed and experienced by the vibraphonist in jazz and improvised music. Most texts about the vibraphone focus on repertoire, melodic, rhythmic, or harmonic choice, physical techniques, or mallet grips. My research aims to recontextualise these elements, and reconsider the vibraphone not just as a musical object, but also as a relational space of “personal voice”, i.e. a mouth.
