My research is on the work of Stefan Knapp and specifically his outdoor enamel murals: concept, fabrication, materials and conservation.
I would like to approach research in three stages: firstly, catalogue Stefan Knapp’s outdoor enamel works; secondly investigate his methods of work and materials; thirdly research and propose a sustainable method of conservation. Stefan Knapp’s murals are fascinating from a technological point of view as well as an artistic one. Not many people know of his work and he appears to be unknown particularly in his country of birth, Poland. His enamelled murals situated in Torun and Olsztyn are an iconic image of the university and planetarium, but not his name. My aim in my research is to increase awareness of the artistic value of his work, and thus also the artistic value of enamel outdoor murals as works of art. I would also like to research adequate conservation treatments for outdoor enamel on metal.
