Renaissance Synthesisers: New Frameworks for Electroacoustic Composition with Early Music Instruments

I am investigating new ways of writing for Early Music instruments and analogue synthesisers. These instruments share an Outsider status to the mainstream of classical music, and are therefore excellently placed to interrogate prevailing cultural hierarchies. Drawing on compositional, socio-cultural, and technological theory and practice, I will explore transgressive sonic combinations, non-traditional performance spaces, digital dissemination, and other emerging practices.

This creative practice PhD will culminate in a portfolio of new experimental compositions for historical instruments and electronics, as well as a documented body of live performance work.
