Heather Connelly is a Post-Doctoral Researcher for the Centre of Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) and the Faculty of Arts, Design & Media.

Title: Translation Zone: experiments in art and language

I have secured funding to employ 4 Postgraduates as Student Academic Partners (SAP) to assist in the development, execution and dissemination of a series of experimental art projects that involve: the voice/performance/text/language and are participatory.

The work expands works that I created during her transdisciplinary practiced-based PhD research (2015) in Fine Art that investigated art-and-translation. I have been a practicing artist for over 20 years and often work collaboratively to bring projects and ideas to fruition, this project will become part of a larger series of events and body of research that I am currently seeking funding to expand, internationally.

Below is an outline of the roles needed:

  • Composer/Conductor

I am looking to work with a musician to create a participatory choral, sound work that focuses upon the tone, rhythm and ‘sounds’ of language – building upon my previous surround sound audio works.

  • Audio/visual documentation

I am looking for someone who is capable of filming and editing the development of the work from multiple perspectives in addition to recording the live performance. They will be expected to be part of the team – so that they can fully understand the emphasis of the work and produce documentation that amplifies its complexity, which can be used for dissemination.

  • Mandarin speaker

One of the participants will need to be a bilingual Mandarin speaker, who – ideally would be capable of conducting a basic language lesson – inducting participants in the tonal pinyin alphabet.

  • Visual Communication

The live work is concerned with the orality of text and language – the sound of the voice.  I would like to work with a graphic designer (now or in the future) who would be interested in experimenting with bilingual – text and typography) to disseminate the work, its findings and the complexity of the phenomenon
