Getting to know your library

October 17 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

As you progress through your PhD, the university library will be your most important contact point for access to a wealth of resources, whether electronic or physical. It will be your first port of call as you begin to survey the field of literature for your thesis. It will also be your last as you place copies of your completed thesis in its repository for cataloguing and storage. The purpose of this session is to introduce the library’s main services, as well as to understand the role of a university library in the knowledge economy of a twenty-first century university.

The session will be delivered as a collaboration between the PGR Studio and ADM Library research specialists. Taking place in an IT classroom so that you can learn through practice, the session will introduce you to key databases, search tools and other protocols for retrieving information in and beyond the university library, such as inter-library loans. It will also put you in touch with specialist library guides and researchers so you can drill down into your research topic with more precision. This general introduction will be followed by more disciplinary-specific sessions and workshops in November, leaving you well-prepared before the submission of your PGCert assignment.

Please note that the computer room we will be using will include mac computers, please bring your own laptop if you would prefer.
